Swimmers take fifth at Badger Meet

Monona Grove junior Kelsey Millin wins the 100-yard butterfly at the Badger South Conference Championships in Stoughton. Millin set a conference record with a time of 58.76 seconds.
The Monona Grove girls swim team crowned a Badger South conference champion and finished in 5th place in the eight-team conference swim meet Friday night in Stoughton.
Junior Kelsey Millin won her second conference title in the 100-yard butterfly, and in the process smashed the conference and Stoughton pool records in the event. Millin swam a season-best time of 58.76 in the event, breaking the previous conference record of 59.67 set in 2002 and the pool record of 59.80 set in 2005. It's her second conference title in the event; she won it as a freshman two years ago.
Millin also helped the Silver Eagles to a third-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, swimming the butterfly leg on the relay. She was joined by fellow juniors Rebekah Opheim (backstroke), Elizabeth Emmerich (breaststroke) and Mattea Grumke (freestyle) in swimming a season-best time of 1:54.96. The time is less than a second off the MG school record in the event.
Emmerich also contributed a third-place finish for the Silver Eagles in her speciality, swimming the 100-breaststroke in a time of 1:10.28, her second-fastest time of the season. Millin also added a third-place finish in the 50 free with a time of 25.56.
Overall, McFarland won the Badger South conference title with 391 points, followed by: Oregon -- 335; Milton -- 332; Edgewood -- 291; Monona Grove -- 230; Fort Atkinson -- 226; Monroe -- 207; Stoughton -- 156.

- 100-yard butterfly: Grumke, 7th, 1:06.40.
- 100-yard free: Emmerich, 6th, 56.71; Derlein, 14th, 58.41.
- 500-yard free: Linsenmeyer, 8th, 5:43.83.
- 200-yard free relay: A relay (Opheim, D. Millin, Larsen, Derlein), 10th, 1:48.75; B relay (Linsenmeyer, Cassandra Nytes, Cecilia Font, Romanski), 13th, 1:57.83.
- 100-yard backstroke: D. Millin, 6th, 1:06.51; Opheim, 9th, 1:07.46.
- 100-yard breaststroke: Romanski, 12th, 1:17.07.
- 400-yard free relay: A relay (Grumke, Emmerich, Derlein, Millin), 4th, 3:48.23; B relay (Font, Kristin Windschiegel, Mennenga, Lauren Kearney), 16th, 4:32.26.
The Silver Eagles next compete this Saturday at the Division 2 sectional qualifying meet in Baraboo.
