MG junior Liz Wendt sets the ball during the Silver Eagles 3-0 win over Mount Horeb.
The Monona Grove girls volleyball team breezed past Mount Horeb in the opening round of the WIAA Regionals last Tuesday, but saw their season end Friday when they dropped a bruiser to conference rivals Madison Edgewood.
The Silver Eagles had little trouble dispatching the Vikings, sweeping them 25-16, 25-4, 25-10 in Monona.
According to MG Head Coach Deidre Bradford, consistency was key for the Silver Eagles in their dominating win.
"Overall, the girls played consistent and didn't drop their level of play, which allowed us to handle Mt. Horeb rather easily," said Bradford.
Senior Monica Anderson came up big in the game, serving up four aces and 14 kills. Fellow senior Abbey Freund kept the offense chugging along with 32 assists.
On the defense, senior Angela Boushea and junior Erin Donahue each had a pair of blocks and junior Liz Wendt had 11 digs.
The win set up a rematch with conference archrival Madison Edgewood. The Silver Eagles and Crusaders split their regular season series, a match apiece.
But the Crusaders took the playoff match in three games, 22-25, 28-30 and 21-25.
The Silver Eagles gave Edgewood all they could handle, forcing the Crusaders to come from behind in the second set after taking an 18-12 lead. MG errors in the second game allowed Edgewood to close the gap and take the game,
MG finished the season second in the Badger South with a conference record of 9-3.
